Balkan Films at the 33rd Istanbul Film Festival

The 33rd Isanbul Film Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation of Culture and Arts and sonsored by Akbank, will take place from 5-20 April 2014. Once again, living up to its reputation, the Festival promises to delight the audience with a full programme screening masterpieces of the world film industry in more than 20 different categories.

Starting with the host, in New Turkish Cinema section, including films completed in 2013-2014, the cinephiles will have the chance to watch more than 40 films in the sub-categories “National Competition”, “Out of Competition”, “New Turkish Cinema”, “Documentaries” and “Hisar Short Film Selection”. 

This year the 10 films competing for the National Golden Tulip award are the following ones.

I Am Not Him by Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, Turkey-France-Germany-Greece, 2013

Let΄s Sin by Onur Ünlü, 2014

In the Out of Competition section will screen the films 
Taste of Poetry by Savaş Baykal, 2013

The films included in the New Turkish Cinema Section are
Civilian by Levent Çetin, 2013
Before Sunrise by Murat Eroğlu, 2014
Moses Without Rod by Aydın Orak, 2014
Worth It by Can Oral, 2014
Mrs. Nergis by Görkem Şarkan, 2013
The Mother by Ebubekir Uyğur, 2013

Thirteen more documentaries and ten short films will screen in the sub-categories “Documentaries” and “Hisar Short Film Selection”.

For Those Who Can Tell no Tales by Jasmila Zbanic

The International Competition includes no Balkan entry, however Balkan films will screen in many other categories. Trans X Istanbul by by Maria Binder (Germany-Turkey, 2014) and For Those Who Can Tell no Tales by Jasmila Zbanic will screen in the Human Rights in Cinema Competition. The section From the World of Festivals include the films September by Penny Panayotopoulou, Three Interpretation Exercises by Cristi Puiu, The Enemy Within by Yorgos Tsemberopoulos and Ningen by Cagla Zencirci (Japan-Turkey-France, 2013).

In New Visions category we meet the Japanese Dog by Tudor Cristian Jurgiu, while the Documentary Time with NTV will present Kismet by Nina-Maria Paschalidou. Miss Violence by Alexandros Avranas, and Terry Gilliam΄s Zero Theorem (UK-USA-France-Romania, 2013) will screen in the Mined Zone and Masters section respectively. The MK2 40th Anniversary category, a section dedicated to the MK2 production and distribution company, includes the film Next Stop Paradise by Lucian Pintilie (France-Romania-Italy, 1998), while Yilmaz Guney΄s The Herd, starting Tuncel Kurtiz who recently passed away, will screen in the In Memoriam section.

The Special Screening: Turkish Classics Revisited will help the audience to recall Yavuz Turgul΄s masterpiece Mr. Muhsin. Another Special Screening offered by the Festival is the Turkish-German co-production Off-White Tulips by Aykan Safoglu (2013).

Finally, the section What a Pair will present the following 38 films from Turkish Cinema.
