“In From What Is Before (Lav Diaz, Philippines) time and space don’t exist. We’re faced with a constant beginning despite the length of the movie. A true cinema experience”, is how the Festival del film Locarno International Competition Jury members described the 338 minutes Golden Leopard winner of the 67th edition. On Saturday 16 August on the Piazza Grande the awards were presented to the winners of the festival before an audience of 5,000 people. Despite the Pardo d’oro going to an Asian film, independent and European cinema were multi awarded – once again, as tradition would have in these parts of the continent.

Pedro Costa from Portugal won the Leopard for Best Direction in International Competition with Horse Moneya and Ariane Labed, awarded as Best Actress in Fidelio, l΄odissée d΄Alice. In the Cineasti del presente Competition (a discovery space dedicated to first and second films from young up-and-coming directors) young French filmmaker Damien Manivel was awarded, with his first feature film Un jeune poète the Jury Special Mention while Simone Rapisa Casanova’s  Italian-Canadian film The Creation of Meaning got the Best up-and-coming Director

Closing the 67th edition, Festival President Marco Solari remarked: “The Festival del film Locarno has this year once again demonstrated growth and consolidated its position in the panorama of the major international film festivals. We will have to think long and hard about future strategies for the Festival’s development.” Locarno’s Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian commented: “Eleven days full of emotion, with outstanding guests and films that recounted the world and the people who inhabit it. Once again, despite the sometimes inclement weather, the Festival del film Locarno, in its 67th edition, was acclaimed by a growing audience, and the many encounters with guests extended the pleasures offered by the films. I salute and thank all the directors, actors and other participants who made Locarno a real meeting place where ideas and experiences intersect.”

Europeans also got the two important awards UBS Public Prize and the Variety Piazza Grande Award, Swiss Schweizer Helden by Peter Luisi and Marie Heurtin by Jean-Pierre Améris while another French film, I, Kamikaze by Sawada Masa won the Special Mention in the First Films section.

No Balkan films or co-productions were awarded this year.
