3 Balkan films will be presented at 3 different sections of the 31st edition of Sundance Film Festival 2015, starting January 22 in Park City, Utah, USA. 118 features out of 12,166 submissions were selected while 45 first-time filmmakers, including 19 in the Competition sections, representing almost 30 countries. 

The World Premiere of Tolga Karaçelik΄s Ivy (Turkey, 2014), screened at the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section, presents the story of a cargo ship sailing to Egypt, when its owner goes bankrupt. The crew learns there is a lien on the ship, and key crew members must stay on board. 

Chuck Norris vs Communism by Ilinca Calugareanu

Another Balkan World Premiere will be that of the mutch-anitcipated documentary Chuck Norris vs Communism by Ilinca Calugareanu (Romania/UK/Germany, 2015), where, a black market VHS racketeer and courageous female translator brought the magic of Western films to the masses and sowed the seeds of a revolutionin in 1980s Romania. The documentary will be presented at the World Cinema Documentary Competition seection.

Pioneers΄ Palace by Bobby Paunescu (Romania, 2014) will be screened in the out of competition Special Events section. The story follows a group of Romanian teenagers who, driven by the unprecedented freedoms of a free-market economy, open a disco in their high school. Surrounded by entrepreneurial opportunity and almost no limits, the teens visit Bucharest’s first-ever brothel and are exposed to the dark underbelly of an unregulated society when they are faced with potential exposure to AIDS).

The 2015 edition of Sundance Film Festival, will also feature a large international short films programme, the usual Hollywood celebrities and indy American guests and participants, music events and two interesting -among others- industry panels streamed live on, the Power of Story panels, one called Visions of Independence, celebrating the craft of independent American filmmaking and the second, Serious Ladies, where female filmmakers and critics discuss female anti-heroes and archetypes in cinema and TV.
