Motovun Film Festival 2015 was held from July 25 – 29 in Croatia, presenting films of small-scale cinematographies and independent productions.

Actor Gunnar Jónsson receiving the Special Mention for his performance on Virgin Mountain

The main award of the festival, the Propeler of Motovun was given unanimously by the Jury composed by directors Petr Lomto and Mira Fornay and actress Tihana Lazovic to the film Wakhan Front by Clément Cogitore (France/Belgium, 2015). “A war film that avoids all stereotypes about war. Instead it speaks about it with magic and original cinematic language, telling the story of a French unit in Afghanistan, far from their families. A film about faith, belief and living in truth all the while questioning what is right and wrong.” the Jury commented their choice.

Dagur Kári΄s Virgin Mountain got a Special Mention for its lead performance by Gunnar Jónsson, “an outstanding performance - creating extraordinary empathy and making us all aware of our loneliness.”

Last year΄s Best Short Film winner, Martin Rath gave the Motovun Shorts Award to the film Life With Herman H. Rott by Chintis Lundgren (Estonia/Croatia/Denmark, 2015, 11΄), while the FIPRESCI Jury, formed by Mihai Fulger from Romania, Josip Grozdanić from Croatia and Dieter Wieczorek from France decided to hand the FIPRESCI Award to Carlos Vermut΄s Magical Girl (Spain, 2014), a film that won the Golden Shell award at last year΄s San Sebastian.

The FIPRESCI Jury was motivated by the using a set of psychologically and morally complex characters, and that in a surprising and subversive way ,the film suggests that good intentions could be a straight way to catastrophe and that the leading force of disaster is the lack of communication.
