Three Balkan titles included at Sundance Film Festival 2016

Park City΄s Sundance Film Festival is opening its doors on January the 21st for a 10-day gathering of US indies, fiction and documentary world premieres from around the globe, industry meetings and panels, and many side-bar and special events.

Sundance 2016 includes 120 feature films from 37 countries, a huge number of first-time filmmakers and about 100 world premieres selected from a total of 12,793 submissions across the world and spread to all of the festival΄s different categories.

Three titles from the region will have their screenings in 3 different sections. The World Cinema Dramatic Competition program will be featuring actress΄ Mirjana Karanovic΄s directorial debut and world premiere, A Good Wife (Serbia/Bosnia-Herzegovina/Croatia, 2016), while in the out-of-competition Spotlight section we find The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthimos (Ireland/UK/Greece/France/Netherlands, 2015). Ziya Demirel΄s short film Tuesday (Turkey/France, 2015, 13΄) has a place in the Shorts program.

European titles included in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition are, among others, Felix van Groeningen΄s Belgica, The Lure by Agnieszka Smoczynska, Wild by Nicolette Krebitz & Elite Zexer΄s, while the festival΄s World Cinema Documentary Competition section will be screening a number of European titles, like Robert Cannan & Ross Adam’s The Lovers and the Despot, The Land of the Enlightened byPieter-Jan De Pue and The Settlers by Shimon Dotan, among others.

The US Dramatic Competition will present the world premieres of 16 American films, such as Nate Parker΄s Birth of a Nation, Cristine by Antonio Campos and Goat by Andrew Neel, among others, while, the US Documentary Competition has programed Bonni Cohen & Jon Shenk΄s Audrie & Daisy, Trapped by Dawn Porter and Newtown by Kim A. Snyder, ta name a few.

On Sundance΄s side-bar events, several conversations with renowned filmmakers will rake place as part of the festival΄s Power of Story panels, Cinema Cafe talks (live stream on Sundance website) and Art of Film weekend. Conversations will include Christopher Nolan, Werner Herzog, Charlie Kaufman, and many more, while filmmaker Richard Linklater will accompany his Dazed and Confused (1993) screening  with a live commentary.
