Balkans Calling... at Thessaloniki Cinematheque
2 February 2016

share info

The Balkans, this unique region with its charming diversity and its special historical, political and cultural processes throughout the years, is the main focus at Thessaloniki cinematheque, through the tribute “Balkans Calling….” which will be held from Thursday, February 4th, until Sunday, February 7th, in the theatre Stavros Tornes (Warehouse 1, Port).

In the frame of this tribute, the cinematheque will screen four multi-awarded films, which stand out for their humanistic and anti-war messages. More specifically, the screenings include the films No Man’s Land by Danis Tanovic, Before the Rain by Milcho Manchevski, Esma΄s Secret by Jasmila Zbanic and The Death of Mr. Lazarescu by Cristi Puiu.

It’s worth to mention that the exceptional anti-war movie No Man’s Land has received, amongst many prizes, the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Esma΄s Secret, which started its successful course at Thessaloniki Film Festival, where the script won the first Balkan Fund award in 2003, has been awarded with the Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival, while Before the Rain has received a Silver Lion at Venice Film Festival

During the screenings, the audience will have the chance to buy the special issue “Balkan Survey 1994 - 2013” which had been released in the frame of the 54th Thessaloniki Film Festival in 2013.
