Introduced at Berlinale 2016, Goethe-Institut Young Directors´ Academy South-Eastern Europe, First Films First is a new, innovative and intensive professional training program with the aim of supporting young Southeast European film directors to develop their first feature-length fiction films.

First Films First focuses on 8 participants only, in order to provide a face-to-face approach, individually adapting and modifying the program in order to accommodate each participant’s specific needs. The deadline for applications is April 15th 2016.

In the course of 10 months, the 8 young directors from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, FYROM, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey get the chance to develop their first feature film projects, step-by-step through different phases of the project development. The whole program consists of 4 modules, each hosted by a partnering festival.

The first module will focus on the development of stories into actual scripts and will take place in the frame of Transylvania Film Festival in Romania (May/June, 2016). In September 2016, Manaki Brothers International Cinematographers Film Festival in Bitola, FYROM, will host the second module of First Films First, helping directors to find their unique visual style for their film and develop their script further. The third module, exploring different directing approaches will take place during Auteur Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia (November/December, 2016), while the training round will end with the final fourth module on pitching and packaging projects, during Sofia International Film Festival in March 2017.

FFF finishes with the pitching presentation of the projects in front of a group of internationally relevant producers, commissioning editors, distributors, and funds representatives at the Sofia Meetings, one of the leading regional co-production markets.

The program aims to provide participants with mentorship on their first feature film project in different phases of development by renowned European film professionals, the necessary arts and crafts required to enter the professional international scene, first-hand insight and practical knowledge about the ever-changing contemporary European film-making world, as well as contacts with some of the most important European decision makers, auteurs and experts.
