At the same time,
The Guardian of August 27, 2011, hosts a very interesting article by Steve Rose about the contemporary Greek cinema in the shadow of the financial crisis.
Particular reference is made to Yorgos Lanthimos’
Dogtooth and Athina Rachel Tsangari’s
Attenberg. The two Greek filmmakers talk about their influences and inspirations. They also describe the difficulties they meet while trying to make cinema in their home country.
In the article that has the title “The weird wave of Greek cinema” there is also information about the films “Wasted Youth” by Argyris Papadimitropoulos and Jan Vogel (whichwas loosely inspired by the real-life shooting of an Athens teenager which sparked the 2008 riots),
Strella by Panos Koutras (where anex-convict and a transsexual form an unorthodox family unit) and
Knifer by Yiannis Ekonomides (a tough but artful study of middle-class desperation)
