Corrected list of submissions of Balkan films to the 84th Academy Awards

The final list of films that will represent Balkan countries in the 84th Academy Awards  (for Best Foreign Language Film) has been announced!

The Albanian Film Committee had decided to submit the Albanian / USA co-production, by the American director Joshua Marston, The Forgiveness of Blood (Best Screenplay Award, Berlin Film Festival) as their entry for Best Foreign Language Film. Bujar Alimani, the Albanian director of Amnistia, a multi award-winning film, co-produced by Albania,Greece and France, made an official protest asking The Forgiveness of Blood to be disqualified.
Finally, the film Amnistia will represent Albania in the 84th Academy Awards.

The B&H film workers association has proposed Belvedere,a drama written and directed by Ahmed Imamovic, to the American academy for Best Foreign Language Film award.
The film is featured in the Global Lens 2011 film series, sponsored by The Global Film Initiative.

Bulgaria΄s National Film Center has put forth Tilt as the Bulgarian nomination for the US Academy Awards. Despite being the debut of director Viktor Chuchkov Jr. and producer Borislav Chuchkov, the film has been screened at several film festivals worldwide,winning awards and receiving positive reviews.

The film 72 Days by Danilo Serbedzija was chosen by the Croatian Film Artist` association (HDFD) to represent croatian cinema at the upcoming US Academy Awards. Serbedzija΄s feature-length debut has won audience choice awards at the film festivals in Pula and Zadar. The leading role is played by the director΄s father Rade Serbedzija (well known in Europe & US – has worked with several directors including  P. Noyce, J. Woo, S. Kubrick, F. Rossi, Guy Ritchie...)

For Greece, the Minister of Culture decided, with the suggestion of the Artistic Commission, to send “Attenberg”, a film by Athina Rachel Tsangari, to represent Greece at the Academy Awards.
The film was nominated for the Golden Lion award at Venice film festival. Ariane Labed was awarded the Best Actress Coppa Volpi for her performance.

The choice of Macedonia FYR is the black comedy Punk΄s Not Dead by the acclaimed writer and director, Vladimir Blazevski, which has just won the Golden Goddess special jury prize at PriFilmFest and will be screened at Thessaloniki Film Festival (Balkan Survey Section) later this year.

Morgen, a film written and directed by Marian Crisan, is the Romanian entry for Best Foreign Language Film. “Morgen is a low-key satire that takes a droll approach to the serious subject of illegal immigration”.The film has been screened in various international film festivals,receiving awards at Locarno and Thessaloniki.

Montevideo,God Bless You!, directed by Dragan Bjelogrlic, has won Serbia`s nomination to join the foreign language Academy Award race for 2012.The film is based on the novel Montevideo, bog te video written by a famous sport journalist, Vladimir Stankovic.It has won several awards including the "Audience Choice Award" at the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival.

"Silent Sonata is a film which is about that which cannot be expressed with words."
With its emphasis on color, form and tone rather than dialogue, this film directed by Janez Burger is a bold, but very welcomed slovenian entry for Best Foreign Language Film.

The co-winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year`s Cannes Film Festival, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, was unanimously chosen by the Commission on Artistic Activities in Turkey, to run for the Best Foreign Language Film Award nomination at US Academy Awards.

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 26, 2012 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The host will be Eddie Murphy.
