Cristian Mungiu’s new film was selected for Official Competion at Cannes Film Festival 2012.

Beyond the Hills is Cristian Mungiu’s first feature since 2007′s Palme d’Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
Sundance Selects has acquired North American rights to Romanian director’s newest movie over the weekend. Cristian Mungiu wrote, directed and, with Pascal Cauchteaux and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, also produced the movie Beyond the Hills

Based on a true, tragic story, Beyond the Hills is about Alina and Voichita, two young women who grew up together in an orphanage and reunite in an isolated convent in Romania. Alina wants to leave and go to Germany, and wants Voichita to go with her. But Voichita is deeply taken by convent life. When Alina challenges the priest, she is taken to a hospital and suspected of being possessed. The priest of the monastery and nuns decide to try an exorcism ritual. In the church of the monastery, Alina is tied to a wooden plank, hungry and without water, as the nuns and the priest pray for salvation, but it is too late, because the poor girl dies from exhaustion. There in no word on a release date yet, but there are some images available.

The movie is based on a true story that happened in 2005, an excorcism that went wrong, resulting in the death of the allegedly possesed victim.

Beyond the Hills is being funded by 400.000 euros from the program Eurimages, and will be a co-production of Mungiu’s own company, Mobra Films, french company Le Films de Fleuve and Why not Productions, the Belgian company of Darden brothers. The movie is also funded by the Rumanian Cinema Center with 273.000 euros.
