The 2012 Cannes film Festival Awards has announced the 54 feature films representing 26 countries that have made it to the final nominees. We are happy to know that three Balkan productions including Beyond the Hills and the short film Sessiz-Be Deng (Silent) are among them. The 65th Cannes film Festival will be held from 16th to 27th of May. Due to the 50 years supplementation since the death of Marilyn Monroe the festival pays a tribute to her memory by selecting her as the icon of this year`s festival.

The host of the festival`s opening and closing ceremonies will be Berenice Bejo, co-star of Jean Dujardin in the silent movie The Artist. Moonrise Kingdom of the American director Wes Anderson will mark the begging of the 65th festival, while Claude Miller`s Therese Desqueyroux will close the curtains for Cannes this year although it is out of competition. Among the contestants are David Cronenberg`s Cosmopolis, Thomas Vinterberg`s Jagten (The Hunt), Alain Resnais`s Vous N`avez Encore Rien Vu, Michael Haneke Amour (Love), Ken Loach`s The Angels` Share, Walter Salles`s On The Road as well as many featured films from across the globe.

The Italian actor and director Nanni Moretti will be the President of the Jury. ``This is a real joy, an honor and a tremendous responsibility to preside over the jury of the most prestigious festival of cinematography in the world, a festival that is held in a country where film has always been treated with interest and respect`` states the director. On the other sections of the festival the English actor and director Tim Roth will be the president of the Un Certain Regard Jury. While the Belgian director, scriptwriter and producer Jean-Pierre Dardenne will be the president of the Cinéfondation.

The Balkan peninsula`s re-presenters come from Romania and Turkey. Beyond the Hills, a film of the Romanian director, scriptwriter and producer Cristian Mungiu, will make its debuted screening at the festival. Mungiu`s first appearance was in the 2002 Cannes as his first featured film Occident was also premiered at the festival that year and on 2007 his film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days got awarded with Palme d΄Or. The other contestant is the Turkish director Rezan Yesilbas with the short film Sessiz-Be Deng (Silent).  Yesilbas was an assistant-director in 2012 Zeki Demirkubuz`s film Inside. And the Balkan presence doesn`t stop here. The school of UNATC and Cristi Iftime from Romania will contest in the Cinéfondation section of the festival with the 22min film Tabara Din Razoare (The Camp in Razoare).

With fingers crossed and wishing the best of luck to all contestants (especially the Balkans) we`ll be waiting to see what the Cannes film Festival has to offer this year.
