Two Romanian actresses, Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur, shared the Best Actress Award for their roles in the drama Beyond the Hills, at the closing ceremony of the 65th Cannes film festival, on Sunday May 27. This is the first feature film role for both of them!
Beyond the Hills won also the Best Screenplay Award. Written and directed by Christian Mungiu, the film centers on the relationship between a young nun and her friend who falls victim to deadly exorcism. Mungiu had won the Golden Palm in 2007 for the Communist-era drama 4 Years, 3 Months and 2 Days.
The jury of the 65th Cannes Film Festival, headed by Italian director Nanni Moretti, gave this year΄s Palme d΄Or to the film Love, by Michael Haneke, a wrenching tale of an elderly man caring for his dying wife.
In addition, the jury of Un Certain Regard section, gave a special distinction to the film Children of Sarajevo, a Bosnian, Turkish, German and France co-production. The film is written and directed by Bosnian director Aida Begic.
