Costas Gavras: Full Retrospective

A full retrospective of Costas Gavras`s films will be held at the Greek Film Archives Foundation in Athens from January 29th to February 6th. Audiences will be given the opportunity to watch in the big screen the directors` complete filmography, consisted of 17 feature films as well as one short film.

During these days there will also be an open discussion under the name “Film Archives: The future of our past?”. The subject of the discussion is the educational role of Film Archives as the trustee of the domestic cultural heritage and their future in connection to the challenges of the new digital age. The discussion will take place at the Greek Film Archives Foundation on Wendsday 31st of January at 19:30, followed by the screening of the film State of Siege.

Costas Gavras was the president of Cinémathèque Française from 1981 to 1986 and from 2007 until now and has stated that one of the most important tasks for Film Archives is to bring audiences back to movie theaters.

Costas Gavras will also give an exclusive masterclass for the students of the Film Studies department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Tuesday 29 at the screening theater of the faculty in Stavroupoli and a masterclass titled “The Art of the Director” which will take place at Onassis Cultural Center on Thursday 31st of January at 10:30.

Costas Gavras will be awarded Honorary Doctorate by the department Film Studies of the Fine Arts School of Aristotle University "for his work which contributes to the development of cinematographic art and represents Greek creativity and promotes Greece`s light globaly". The ceremony will be held at the at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Monday 28 of January 2013 at 19:00.   

Costas Gavras is a director who chooses to speak about political and social issues through his films and has won many prestigious awards. His film Z has won an Oscar for Best Foreign Picture and Best Editing and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also nominated for Palme d`Or and won the Jury Prize at Cannes. Among many other awards he has won a Palme d`Or for the film the Missing and a Golden Bear for the film The Music Box. He has worked with actors such as Yves Montand, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Irene Papas, Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, and Dustin Hoffman.

His last film The Capital, now playing at theaters in Athens, uses the head of a giant investment bank as vehicle to speak about corruption and the financial and monetary system. Costas Gavras has often stated his opinion about the financial crisis saying that this is an economic war. 

The retrospective of Costas Gavras` films is conducted by the Greek Film Archive in collaboration with the French Institute of Athens, the Onassis Cultural Center and the departments Media of the University of Athens and Film Studies of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
