32nd Istanbul International Film Festival 2013

The 32nd Istanbul Film Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation of Culture and Arts (İKSV), sponsored by Akbank, will be held from 30 March to 14 April. The Istanbul Film Festival, with 150.000 followers each year, keeping its leading position with the variety and quality of the films presented promises two whole weeks full of a film programme to cinephiles, with more than 200 films under more than 20 sections, panels, workshops and master classes with expert film makers.

The festival will meet the audience this year with a wide spectrum selection expanding from new feature films of 2012 and 2013, unforgettable classic films, masterpieces of master directors, films having premiered in Sundance in January and in Berlinale in February, Golden Tulip and FACE Competitions to documentaries and children films. The festival programme includes a new section titled “Stories of Women” as well as “From Literature to Silver Screen” section which comes back after a long break, and special sections such as “Am I Not a Citizen?” in collaboration with the 13th Istanbul Biennial to start in September and “Reality is a Miracle: Carlos Reygadas”. Meetings On The Bridge, which is highly expected by the film industry each year, will be held for the eighth time within the scope of the festival.
The poster of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival features a photograph by the leading director of contemporary “auteur” cinema, screenwriter and photography artist Nuri Bilge Ceylan from his series called “For My Father” (Babam İçin). Bülent Erkmen choosing the photograph Uykusuz Gece / Sleepless Night for the festival also used the handwriting of the director in his design.

The International Competition Golden Tulip Award, presented in memory of Şakir Eczacıbaşı, will be supported with the 25.000 Euros award by the Eczacıbaşı Group. The director of the winning film will receive 10.000 Euros, the company which will distribute the film in Turkey will receive 10.000 Euros, and 5.000 Euros will be given to the film that receives the Special Jury Award.

 
The Dream of a Butterfly by Yilmaz Erdogan

The head of jury for the “International Competition” will be Peter Weir and 12 films will compete for the Golden Tulip. Between them The Dream of a Butterfly,the story of two poets, by Yılmaz Erdoğan and Lifelong, by Aslı Özge.

In “Turkish Cinema” section of the Istanbul Film Festival, including films completed in 2012-2013 season, there will be 31 films in total under the “National Competition”, “Out of Competition”, “Documentaries” and “New Turkish Cinema” sections.

National Golden Tulip Competition

10 films from Turkey, completed in 2012-2013 season will compete in the National Golden Tulip Competition. “National Competition” Jury will be headed by the Turkish film director Tayfun Pirselimoğlu. The awards will be distributed in 9 categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Special Jury Award, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Music.

Best Picture in the “National Competition” category selected by the jury will be awarded with 150.000 TL and Best Director will be awarded with 50.000 TL. Special Jury Award supported with monetary award in 2011 for the first time will be given to the second best film again this year. Producer of the movie awarded with the Special Jury Award in memory of Onat Kutlar will be given 30.000 US dollars by Efes. Best Actress and Best Actor will be awarded with 10.000 TL. The Istanbul Film Festival Golden Tulip Competition Jury will also give the Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Music awards.  

This year, 10 films will be vying for Golden Tulip in National Competition of the festival before the jury. Following are the competition films including 2 Turkey premiere and 6 world premieres:

- Nobody’s Home by Deniz Akçay Katiksiz

- Saroyanland by Lusin Dink


- Karnaval by Can Kılcıoğlu

- Thou Gild΄st The Even by Onur Ünlü




Human Rights In Cinema
The Film Award of the Council of Europe: FACE

FACE – The Film Award of the Council of Europe, which began seven years ago and only given within the scope of the Istanbul Film Festival, continues to be awarded with the support of the Council of Europe. The FACE Award will be presented to one of the films screened at “Human Rights in Cinema” section, which raises public consciousness and sensitivity to human rights related issues. In the “Human Rights in Cinema” section with 10 films, a representative from the Council of Europe will present the 10.000 Euros monetary prize to the director of the winning film at the Closing Ceremony of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival. Eurimages Fund of the Council of Europe supporting co-production, distribution, and presentation of European cinema is a partner to the FACE Award. FACE Jury will be headed by Anca Damian 

The producer of F Tipi Film is Grup Yorum which has a significant role in the history of the country both for their music and political stands. The film mostly takes in a F type prison. Ezel Akay, Barış Pirhasan, S. Süreyya Önder, Aydın Bulut, Hüseyin Karabey, Reis Çelik, İnan Altın, Vedat Özdemir and M. İlker Altınay are directors of the film, each of whom tells a different story from a different cell. 

Mold by Ali Aydin ,Circles by Srdan Golubovic, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker by Danis Tanovic. In this latest film by Danis Tanovic, who was awarded with the Academy Award in 2001 with No Man’s Land, there are amateur actors who play themselves. Lead actor Nazif Mujic was appraised by film critics and awarded with Best Actor Award in Berlin. Danis Tanovic, director and co-producer of the film, Cedomir Kolar and Amra Basic Camo will participate to the panel discussion to be held within the “Meetings on the Bridge”. The speakers will talk about the low-budget film-making process in the panel titled “Is it possible to make film without a budget?” to be held at Tuesday, 9 April at 11:00 at İKSV.

In memoriam Seyfi Teoman

The Istanbul Film Festival will present an award in memoriam of director and producer Seyfi Teoman, who passed away last year at the young age of 35. All the first films from Turkey in the International and National Golden Tulip Competitions, “Out of Competition” and “New Turkish Cinema” zones of the “Turkish Cinema” section as well as the films in “Human Rights in Cinema” section will be able to be nominated to the Seyfi Teoman Best First Feature Film Award.

Director of the film awarded with Seyfi Teoman Best First Feature Film Award will be presented 30,000 TL by Cem Yılmaz via CMYLMZ Fikirsanat. The first year jury of the Seyfi Teoman Best First Feature Film Award consists of director Emin Alper, actress Saadet Aksoy, and film critic Rüdiger Suchsland from Germany.

Special Screening: Turkish Classics Revisited

Istanbul Film Festival brings the masterpieces of Turkish cinema to the silver screen in its “Special Screening: Turkish Classics Revisited” section, initiated six years ago under the sponsorship of Groupama
This year, a memorable melodrama Vesikalı Yarim / My Prostitute Love (1968) by 
Lütfi Ö. Akad will be presented to the audience after restored by Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Prof. Sami Şekeroğlu Cinema-TV Centre. Starring İzzet Günay and Türkan Şoray, the film was scripted by Safa Önal from the story of Sait Faik Abasıyanık called Menekşeli Vadi.

With the cooperation of Groupama, cinephiles had the opportunity to watch 1979 film On Fertile Lands by Erden Kıral, 1949 film Vurun Kahpeye / Strike the Whore by Ö. Lütfi Akad, 1978 film Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım / The Girl with the Red Scarf by Atıf Yılmaz, 1958 film Üç Arkadaş / Three Friends by Memduh Ün and 1964 film Gurbet Kuşları / Birds of Exile by Halit Refiğ from the restored copy last year.

Costa Gavras one of the most prominent political film directors, will be presented with the Honorary Cinema Award before the screening of Capital on Sunday, 7 April.
