Toronto International Film Festival honors Athens

Athens will be the focus of this year City to City Programme in the frames of the 38th Toronto International Film Festival, which will be held from 05 to 15 September 2013. Ten greek productions will participate in this programme, which was established in 2009 aiming to spotlight new directors, living and working in each year΄s chosen town. The artists will have the opportunity to meet representatives from the film industry and to explore possibilities of future co-productions while their films will screen during one of the most important international film festivals with a worldwide prestige.

This year΄s tribute to Athens is the fifth one in a row, organized after those to Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Buenos Aires and Mumbai. It is an initiative of Toronto festival΄s artistic director Cameron Baily and of Thessaloniki International Film Festival΄s director and head of Toronto International Film Festival international programme, Dimitris Eipidis and is carried out with the support of the Greek Film Center, which will have an active presence in the festival in order to promote the greek participants in the best way.




Besides screenings, during the Toronto International Film Festival, lectures, discussions and workshops are organized to support the film industry as well as to give Canadian and directors from all over the world the chance to present their work.

Except from the focus to Athens and Greek films, the festival will also screen in varius sections some of the best Balkan films of the last year. The new film Singing Women by Turkish director Reha Erdem will be screened as a Special Presentation. In the Contemporary World Cinema will be screened the films When Evening Falls On Bucharest or Metabolism by Corneliu Porumboiu and the Grand Jury Prize winner of this years Berlin Film Festival, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker by acclaimed director Danis Tanovic. In the section Wavelenghts we meet the film Three Exercises of Interpretation by Cristi Puiu and in the Vanguard section the film Thou Gild΄st the Even by Onur Unlu.
