The 66th Locarno Film Festival will be held this year from 07 to 17 August in the city of Locarno in Switzerland. Throughout its long history the festival has been established as one of the most important film festivals. Every August, for eleven days the town of Locarno, right in the heart of Europe, becomes the world capital of auteur cinema. 

In this year΄s festival we meet the film When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism/ Când se lasă seara peste Bucureşti sau metabolism (Romania, 2013, 93min) by Corneliu Porumboiu competing for the Pardo d΄ oro award in the Corcorso Internazionale, a section that presents a stimulating panorama of contemporary auteur cinema. 

The film Roxanne (Romania/Hungary, 2013, 97min) by Valentin Hotea will screen in the section Corcorso Cineasti del presente, which is dedicated to emerging directors from all over the world and devoted to first and second features. The winners of the section get the Pardo d΄oro Cineasti del presente award.

The short films The Walk/ Plimbare (Romania, 2012, 15min) by Mihaela Popescu and Pride (Bulgaria/Germany, 2013, 30min) by Pavel.V.Vesnakov will represent the Balkan region in the Pardi di domani section which includes national and international competition and offers the Pardino d΄ oro award.

Finally the italian documentary Indebito by Andrea Segre which is shot in Greece and narrates of the national crisis on the notes of the Rebetiko, will open the festival on Wednesday 7th, at 15:45, followed by a concert given by Vinicio Capossela, accompanied by five Greek musicians.


The Piazza Grande Opening Ceremony will start at 21:30. With one of the biggest screens in Europe the programming on the Piazza Grande offers prestigious screenings, most of them world, international or European premieres, introduced by the director and the cast. The Piazza Grande audience also serves as the biggest jury on the planet, voting for the renowned Prix du Public UBS(Audience Award). In addition, there is the Variety Piazza Grande Award, chosen by a panel of film critics, and intended to assist the international career of a film in the selection. Finally there is also the Pardo per la Migliore Opera prima (Leopard for the Best First Feature), Prize from the City and Region of Locarno (30,000 CHF to be shared equally between the director and the producer) for the best first film screened in the Concorso internazionale, the Concorso Cineasti del presente and in the Piazza Grande section.
