Berlinale Co-Production Market: Call for Entries Starts Now / For 2014: Submission Requirements Eased for Greece, Spain and Portugal

Effective immediately and until October 23, 2013, experienced producers from all over the world may submit new feature film projects that are suitable for international co-production and have 30% of their financing already in place to the Berlinale Co-Production Market 2014.

For Greece, Spain and Portugal, three countries badly affected by the financial crisis, budget requirements have been waived this year. “Normally producers may submit projects with budgets between one and twenty million euros”, says Festival Director Dieter Kosslick. “But these European film nations have suffered such a downturn over the last few years that they need our help to get projects off the ground and maintain a presence on the international market. It’s about fostering European and global cooperation even if projects from these countries now have to be developed on much smaller budgets. This is why we have done away with the minimum budget for Greek, Spanish and Portuguese projects this year.”
Alongside the general call for entries for the Berlinale Co-Production Market, applications are now being accepted for the “Talent Project Market”, a cooperation between the Berlinale Talent Campus and the Co-Production Market. As part of the application for the Campus, newcomers from around the world may apply online until September 18 for this project lab which has more open budget and financing eligibility criteria. The selected filmmakers will then be given the opportunity to present their projects at the Co-Production Market.

A total of about 35 projects will be selected from all the entries submitted to the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Their producers will be brought together at the 11th  Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 9 - 11, 2014) with interested potential co-producers, financiers, sales agents, distributors, representatives of TV broadcasters and funding bodies in about 1000 individual meetings scheduled in advance specifically for this purpose.
Since 2004, about 160 Berlinale Co-Production Market projects have been completed, that is, more than 40% of the selected projects have been made into films, and screened at international festivals and in cinemas.
The Berlinale Co-Production Market is part of the European Film Market. The main partners of the Berlinale Co-Production Market are the MDM – Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (since 2004) and the MEDIA-Programme of the European Union (since 2005).
