Plot
Seventeen-year-old Fikret illegally sells roses on the Bosphorus bridge that links Asia and Europe. At the same time, he is looking for a regular job in Istanbul’s old downtown area. Twenty-eight-year-old Umut is a taxi driver and drives back and forth along the Bosphorus bridge every day. He is searching for a better apartment to rent in order to satisfy his wife, whose desires are beyond his earnings.Traffic policeman Murat, who is stationed at the Bosphorus bridge, feels lonely amid the solid lines of cars. Each night at home, he logs on to the Internet looking for a woman he can date. Fikret, Umut and Murat intersect in the rush hour with millions of other Istanbulites, coping with the straits of fulfilling their aspirations in the big city. The story is based on the lives of the characters depicting themselves in the original locations.
Director's Statement
In Men on the Bridge I wanted to focus on how the fear of an uncertain future shapes the daily lives of young people in today’s Istanbul. At first glance, the rhythm of daily life in Istanbul appears to be frenetic and frantic; in fact, the daily lives and the realisation of the aspirations of many of its inhabitants grind along at a pace comparable to that of gridlock on the Bosphorus Bridge. In the beginning, I intended to make a documentary film, but after getting to know three engaging characters, who are working around the bridge, I decided to write a script inspired by their own stories and offered them to act themselves in the film. But the Turkish police authorities didn΄t give permission to shoot with a real police officer, therefore, the police roles in the film are played by actors.
While showing the characters clashing their personal boundaries, I wanted to violate the borders between real and unreal, amateur and professional, documentary and fiction.
