The documentary tells the story of a family of four, living in self-imposed exile within the conservative and often conformist Bulgarian society. They despise the onus of materialism and consumerism and choose to live outside social norms. The children – James (20 years old) and Madelyn (15) – never attempt to school. The parents shape them according to their own preferences, beliefs and illusions. The family live in a basement as the unofficial heirs of the hippie generation and intrepidly carry their independence through the years, ignoring social rules and comfortable routines. So they seek refuge from a world falling apart, taking their dog, cats, canaries, crow, and even a rat along on their own Noah's Ark... and embark on a quest for balance and meaning.
