In 1940–41, as World War II reaches its climax, a lieutenant’s wife and a seregeant fall madly in love. Circumstances – a raging war, the soldier’s duty, marriage, the friendship between the two men who serve together at the front line – rule out this love but cannot negate it. When the lieutenant is taken to hospital, having been wounded during a military operation, the two lovers dare to follow the only way out, in the face of all moral obligations and commitments that bind them: he deserts; she walks out on her husband and the two set off together for the border, on a journey of no return. |
