The film is the portrait of a musical genre which was born in the multinational cities of Constantinople and Smyrna by the working class and, in part, by the middle class of the Greek community. They Tell Me not to Love You$ tries to hearken to the people who lived there, whose life was expressed through this music in all its manifestations: in the workplace, in celebration, in love, in peacetime, in wartime, in exile... The film presents certain important musicians of this musical genre, but it is not a detailed or synoptic history. Above all it is a journey with no fixed itinerary, here and there, in an effort to trace this music in people, places, objects, different kinds of music and dance |
