Eurydice is a singer in a small band of musicians that plays in the summer country fairs. Alekos is the leader of the group. With him are Dioyssis on the violin and Kyriakos on the clarinet. When Kyriakos leanes the band, the group asks Orpheus, a mute shepherd who plays the clarinet divinely, to join them on a temporary basis. Panos, a wealthy merchant farmer talks Eurydice into going to Athens with him where he promises to make her a famous singer. But things are different there and Eurydice returns to the band which Orpheus has transformed into something unique with the magical power of his art. But Panos follows her and with the help of two of his henchmen, in the ensuing fracas, he forcibly abducts Eurydice and smashes Orpheus' clarinet. A little further down the road Panos' car crashes into a harvester. Orpheus runs and pulls a bleeding Eurydice from the wreckage and in an effort to talk to her, he plays with his broken clarinet. At the sound of the music Eurydice moves her lips slightly.... |
