An urban legend, the Swearing Oflu Hodja, has been an internet phenomeon when it first came out 10 years ago. Some voice recordings were circulating that allegedly belonging to a hodja from Of, cursing young people who gamble, drink alcohol and flirt with Russian girls. In an almost odyssey like setup to determine the owner of this famous voice, a group of young filmmakers decide to make a documentary, which would also help promote the beauties of the Black Sea Region. They ask for the support of a businessman, who is planning to start a giant construction project in the region. He sees an advertisement potential in it, and agrees to help them. However, things take a nasty turn. Heralded by its director as belonging to ‘anarchic humour’, not only is it a blend of fiction, documentary and dark comedy -it is a psychedelic journey in itself which you will only realize when you see the film. With this crazy, satyrical mockumentary debut, Levent Soyarslan is a fresh new voice to watch in recent Turkish cinema. |
