Plot
How long can a dysfunctional authority sustain hierarchy? When the Sarmaşık (Ivy) ship boards the port, it turns out that the ship owner’s agent has not paid the harbour dues and that a garnishee order was secured on the ship. The port authorities moor the ship at an isolated area of the harbour and evacuate it except for 6 crew members who would remain in case the ship would need to be moved again: the captain whom they call Sire, machinist Kurd, purser Nadir from the kitchen, two sailors Alper and Cenk, and veteran seafarer İsmail. Sarmaşık tells the story of these six men during the 120 days they spend onboard suffering lack of provisions. “This story presented me with the opportunity to consider many things in terms of the authority and individual relations. I came to realise that certain things that apply to the trapped sailors would also apply to all of us. Our captains are becoming more and more conservative, even fascist, but are they aware that the oceans end. The ocean ended; a ship that does not sail is not a ship. If it isn’t the time to ask what the sailors in the story do, will it be the right time tomorrow: ‘What should we do with the captain now?’” – Tolga Karaçelik
