“The guide” is a comedy about a young confused Greek set in the equally confusing Greek capital. Iasonas starts off trying to show his group the best of Athens. Soon the group brings him to face the fundamental conflict of the modern Greek identity: pride for the glorious past and frustration for the chaotic present. Athens’ architecture visualizes this conflict in the most eloquent way. It’s a city globally recognized by the Acropolis, a glorious monument of the past, which is surrounded by an oriental/balkan looking modern city. Exploring the architectural identity of Athens is paralleled with the exploration of Iasonas’ identity. It’s difficult to be gay, it’s difficult to be a geek and it’s difficult to be a Greek.
