One Saturday evening, Mr. Lazarescu, a 63-year-old widower, calls for an ambulance after suffering from head and stomach-aches. He lives alone with his three cats, likes to drink, and often self-medicates from his supply of pills.When the ambulance fails to arrive, Mr. Lazarescu asks his neighbours, the Sterians for help.Though disapproving of his dirty apartment and the alcohol on his breath, they manage to summon help, which arrives in the guise of nurse Mioara and ambulance driver Leo.Meanwhile, victims of a local bus accident are crowding the city’s hospitals. As the night wears on and his condition worsens, Mr. Lazarescu will be transferred to four hospitals and seen by countless doctors, almost all over-worked and short-tempered, and each with his own diagnosis…
