Yeni Sinemacılık was founded in 1998 by Serdar Akar, Önder Çakar and Sevil Demirci. Yeni sinemacılar (New Cineasts literally), with a few author director, are some of the leaders of the artistical acceleration of the Turkish cinema in the 90’s. They are also the only group of independent cineasts skilled in different areas, that continues to produce steadily. The cinema created by this team is neither entangling itself in the old Yeşilçam traditions, nor does it copy the western trends. So the “Yeni” (“New”) that has been put in front of their names is justified by their films.
The works of Yeni Sinemacilar comprise different visual styles and stories, but all the films gather in a mutual approach. One of the pronounced characteristic of this approach is the refined depictation, in dramas focused on characters, of subjects which are socially important for Turkey, but appart of “cliché” patterns, not thoroughly explored. In “Gemide” (“On Board”) it is the working class, the cross linked story to it, “Laleli’de bir Azize” (“A Madonna in Laleli”) it is the subculture of İstanbul night life revolving around prostitution, in “Dar Alanda Kisa Paslasmalar” (“Offsides”) it is the repercussions of the coup of the 12 September 1980, in “Maruf” it is the ethnic wounds in South Eastern Anatolia. |
