Istanbul-based Deniz Gül, works with text, objects, photography, performance, and film to explore the ways in which people construct identities through their social selves, behavioral patterns, and daily rituals. Gül’s projects often incorporate multiple phases; she creates sculptural installations supported by an earlier piece of writing, followed by an adaptation to a performance. Gül aims to interrogate the ways in which public and private spaces are constructed, seeking to redefine boundaries, infusing the spaces with new patterns of meaning.
Born in 1982, İzmir, Turkey, Deniz lives and works in Istanbul, where she received her BA in Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design. Since 2004, Gül’s work has been included in exhibitions, including at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Palais des Beaux Artes, Lille, Centre De Cultura Contemporania, Barcelona. In 2011, her work was the subject of a solo exhibition 5 Person Bufet at ARTER, Istanbul. She has participated in residencies in Mumbai, Tokyo, and Salzburg. |
