Bio
Marcello Mastroianni was born in Fontana Liri, Italy on 28 September 1924. During the second World War he was sent to a German prison-camp, but he managed to escape and hide in Venice. In 1945, Mastroianni started working for a film company and began taking acting lessons, whilst three years later his first role came with the film I Miserabili. He soon became a major actor of international radius although his real breakthrough came in 1960, when Federico Fellini cast him as an attractive, weary-eyed journalist of the Rome jet-set in La Dolce Vita. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times, for Divorce Italian Style , A Special Day and Dark Eyes. During the last decade of his life he worked with director Theo Angelopoulos in the films The Bee Keeper and The Suspended Step of the Stork, as well as with many other directors of the same radius.
