Bio
Mikis Theodorakis was born on the island of Chios in 1925. From an early age he became familiar with folk music and the music of the Greek Orthodox Church. During the Second World War he participated in the Resistance against the Germans, while continuing his studies in composition. His first symphony was composed on the notorious prison island of Makronissos, during the Greek Civil War (1945-48).

In 1954 Theodorakis graduated from the Athens Conservatory, and was awarded a scholarship for Paris Conservatoire where he studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and conducting with Eugene Bigot. He received commissions for film scores and ballet music and in 1959 his ballet Antigone was presented at Covent Garden.

In 1960 he began setting Greek poetry to music and creating a new wave of sophisticated popular song. Theodorakis was  elected a deputy of the United Left Party in 1964, he was also made president of the Lambrakis Youth Movement. Theodorakis’s musical and political attempts to break down the divisions in Greek society were interrupted by the military dictatorship that took control of Greece in April, 1967.  In 1968 Theodorakis was placed under house arrest and after that transferred again to prison camp. International pressure for his release mounted and he was allowed to leave for Paris in 1970.

His works like Axion Esti and Canto General, settings of the Nobel Prize winning poets Odysseus Elytis and  Pablo Neruda, respectively, became part of the repertoire of dozens of choirs. In 1983 Theodorakis was awarded the Lenin Prize for Peace. Following the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, Theodorakis went on a European tour giving concerts to oppose the use of atomic energy.

Through his carrier Theodorakis activity in political matters was renowned. He took actions towards finding a solution in the Cyprus Problem, Israel-Palestine relations and Greek-Turkish relations among other. He also composed the scores of many film productions such as Zorba The Greek, Z and Electra.
