Bekim Fehmiu was a Yugoslavian theater and film actor of Albanian ethnicity. He was born in 1936 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and died in 2010 in Belgrade, Serbia -initial reports stated he committed suicide.
His big break was the 1967 film I Even Met Happy Gypsies, a subtle portrayal of Roma life which won two awards in Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar.
Bekim Fehmiu starred in Hollywood, appearing in over 40 films alongside actors as Dirk Bogarde, Ava Gardner, Claudia Cardinale, Robert Shaw, Olivia de Havilland and Irene Papas. He was married with the Serbian actress Branka Petric and had two sons. One of them is the actor Uliks Fehmiu.
