Aleksandar (Sasa) Petrovic was one of the most acclaimed directors of Yugoslav cinema. He was born in 1929, in Paris, France. He  studied film directing at the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague, and graduated Art History in Belgrade.
Petrovic was one of the major figures of the Yugoslav Black Wave, along with Dusan Makavejev and Zivojin Pavlovic. His films Three (1966) and I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967) were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film I Even Met Happy Gypsies won the Grand Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Film Festival. Aleksandar Petrovic died in 1994 in Paris.
