Born on the 28th of August 1987, Alexander was raised in the countryside north of Oxford. Always fascinated by any form of storytelling, Alexander has been making films and writing tales since childhood. At school he became increasingly involved in theatre; acting, writing and directing. Winning art awards and publishing work, he also started a student run drama club that proved so popular it has become an ongoing tradition at the school.
In 2005 Alexander attended an Art & Design foundation course where his focus fell on photography and animation. The following year he documented a trip worldwide and worked with a professional photographer in California.
Between the years 2007-2010 Alexander combined his artistic interests with the academic study of Classical History at the University of Manchester. Whilst studying for his degree Alexander gained his first work experience in film doing some miniature design for Columbia’s “Angels & Demons”. He soon set about writing scripts inspired by the ancient heroism and mythology he’d been reading and planned to pursue his lifelong dream of a career in film.
Earning a scholarship to Central Film School London, Alexander honed his skills writing, directing, producing and editing his (or his peers) films. His works include the short film ‘Collide’, starring Andrew Paul from British television show “The Bill”. And ‘Pawn & Rook’, shot on 16mm film. His training also included time spent in New York at David Mamet and William H. Macy’s Acting school, The Actors Studio and the Lee Strasburg School, helping equip an understanding of the various techniques for directing a performance. His latest short, ‘Wimp’, was the opening film screened at the graduations held at BAFTA and was later published in an Oxford based newsletter. Nominated for best director, student of the year and best film it received high praise.
In 2011, while still at college, Alexander opened Matchbox Productions as a porthole into creating future work. He has now gathered a team of young, passionate and experienced talent all seeking work in the film market. Their debut production was ‘Dead Frost’, a short London horror. Future projects now vary in size and scale.
Then, aged 23, Alexander gathered investors to back his first independent feature film, ‘The Telemachy’, (a modern re-telling of Homer’s Odyssey). Produced by Matchbox and collaborative partners it was filmed on locations in both the UK and Greece. ‘The Telemachy’ allowed Alexander opportunity to work with and manage professional actors and crew across two countries, as well as post-production experience at both Pinewood and Shepperton studios. Already earning some positive review for its visual style that surpasses its budget, the film will be finished in late 2012.
Alexander is also a keen editor; believing that understanding how to edit is one of the most important parts of directing. He’s edited several short films and due to finance restrictions he personally edited the entire Telemachy film. Meanwhile Alexander continues to work hard on developing his skills as a writer/director.
