Growing up the eldest of 4 siblings raised by a single mother during the heart of the depression, he loved words and devoured books and started writing at a very young age, winning a Boys Life magazine contest was the first taste of national acclaim. He set off for University of Michigan at 16 on a scholarship, a school he was a fan of to the end.
